Student & Parent Information

Acceptance
Upon admittance to Crooms AoIT, SCPS guidlines state that students are expected to remain at Croom AoIT for the entire school year. In addition, students are expected to maintain a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.5 or higher. Any student below a 2.5 GPA will be warned and placed on academic probation. It will be at the discretion of administration as to whether or not a student with a GPA below 2.5 remains at Crooms AoIT.
Activity Bus
For students who are interested in participating with after school athletics or club organizations, an activity bus is available on a daily basis. The activity bus leaves from Crooms AoIT around 5:15 pm and delivers students to their zoned high school.
Address Changes
In order for Crooms AoIT to maintain correspondence with parents it is extremely important to contact the Crooms AoIT Guidance Office immediately when you have a new address. Documentation that validates your new address is required. Please provide two of the following documents that can verify your new address: driver's license, phone bill, utility bill, cable bill, voting registration card, credit card bill, apartment or home lease, homestead exemption, auto registration or warrantee deed. Please present the two documents to Joan Cameron in the Guidance Office at 407-320-5722.
AP Courses
Crooms AoIT includes a variety of Advanced Placement courses in their curriculum. Colleges and Universities perceive that high school students who have taken at least one AP course have an increased chance of being successful in college.
Students must receive a passing score on the teacher delivered pretest in order for the school to pay for the exam. Students without a passing score may take the exam, but must incur the cost of the exam(s) themselves.
In order to receive AP credit, students who have earned an A, B, or C in the AP class must take the AP exam. In order to receive college credit a student must score a three (3) or better. Students who do not pass the pretest (and do not take the AP exam) bust have maintained a grade of "C" or better in the course will receive honors credit.
An Advanced Placement Night for parents and students is scheduled each year. AP instructors will be available to answer questions and the AP curriculum will be available for parents and students to review.
Attendance Info
It is requested that a parent contact Ms. Wood at 407-320-5760 in the Attendance Office when your child is absent from school. Excused absences include: medical treatment by a licensed physician, observance of a religious holiday, court, death of a family member, natural disaster, a traffic accident, that directly involved the student or circumstances that have been pre-arranged with the Principal, Dr. Collins.
Bus Information
For any student attending Crooms AoIT, bus transportation is provided from a bus stop near your home. For information related to bus routes and bus passes please contact Ms. Wood at 407-320-5760. A request form must be completed for a change in bus stop. Please note: 10 days is typically required for a bus route change to begin.
College Visits
The guidance department will schedule college visits for students at Crooms AoIT. Information about the visits will be posted in First Class under the News folder. Students are encouraged to sign up for any colleges they are interested in applying to and potentially attending. Students who have signed up will be granted permission to leave class and meet with college personnel.
Credit Make-up
There are two options for students to achieve credit make-up at Crooms AoIT.
1. SIP: The SIP program is designed to help students make-up loss of credit from the first semester only. The following steps must be followed in order for credit to be restored.
  1. In January the student must contact the teacher of the class they failed.
  2. The student must complete all work as indicated by the teacher.
  3. the student must maintain a "C" average during the third quarter
  4. When all work is completed as expected by the deadline, the student's grade will be changed

2. Summer School: Students may make-up credit from failing a class in summer school. When signing up for summer school, so that credit can be restored remember two things
  1. Sign up for the exact same class with the exact same course code number
  2. Sign up for summer school session I if you need to repeat a course you took during first semester. Sign up for summer school session II if you need to repeat a course you took during second semester. See Summer School for additional details.
Earning Credit
Course credits can be earned in a variety of ways.
  1. School Year: A student can earn one (1) full credit towards high school graduation when they complete two semesters of instruction in a designated course. Each semester must include a minimum of 75 hours of instruction and contain student performance standards. A student can earn one-half (1/2) of credit towards high school graduation when they complete one semester (75 hours) of instruction and completed the required performance standards. A student who has been enrolled in a course, but has not been in attendance for instruction for the 75 hours may not be awarded credit unless the student can demonstrate mastery of the performance standards. Assessment of student performance may include class work, tests, and a final comprehensive exam.
  2. Summer School: Credits can also be earned by attending summer school. One-half (1/2) credit can be earned by attending one session of summer school. One (1) credit can be earned by attending both sessions of summer school. Please note: Daily attendance is mandatory in order to fulfill the minimum hours of instruction.
  3. Credit by Exam: Twice a year, students have an opportunity to take a CBE test and earn credit even though they may not have officially taken the course. The following exams are available through CBE: Algebra 1, Geometry, World History, American Government, Computer literacy, _____. A score of ___% is required in order for credit to be awarded.
Note: this method of earning credit is the most difficult to achieve, as a student has not had the benefit of instruction. However, there is no penalty for attempting a CBE exam.
Students interested in this form of earning credit must sign up with their Guidance Counselor by the deadline. Students are expected to arrive on time at the designated testing site and follow all guidelines of entrance for the exam.
  4. Florida Virtual: Florida Virtual offers classes online for credit. The following classes can be taken online: Spanish I, Spanish II, _____ students interested in earning credit in this manner must complete the online application and then have your Guidance Counselor confirm the application online.
Note: Approximately 10,000 students a year attempt to use Florida Virtual to earn credit. Therefore, upper-class students who need credits to graduate will be given first priority.
Enrolling in Crooms AoIT
A parent must present the following items when enrolling their child at Crooms AoIT:
  • Valid birth certificate

Exam Exemption
The School Board of Seminole County has discontinued the option for exam exemptions for the current school year.
FCAT and Other Tests
The NRT Reading and Math are administered along with the FCAT. The results of these examinations compare students from Florida with students across the nation. These exams will be administered on dates announced by the Seminole County School Board.
The FCAT assesses Reading, Math, Writing and Science. All students must pass the 10th grade FCAT Reading and Math portions with a level three (3) or higher in order to graduate with a standard high school diploma. 10th grade students who do not pass the FCAT the first time will have six (6) more opportunities to retake it during June, September, and March of their junior and senior year. Note: If a student fails to score a three (3) or higher on the Reading and/or Math sections of the FCAT, in accordance with Florida law, they will be placed in an academic intervention class.
Grade Classification
Students will receive one (1) credit for each subject completed satisfactorily throughout a regular school year. No credit shall be granted for athletics, extra-curricular activities, or any course not listed in the Florida Course Code Directory. Grade Level status is based on credits earned and classified as follows:

Regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused, a student is required to make up all coursework. It is the student's responsibility to obtain any assignments missed, immediately upon return to school. A student will be provided the same number of days absent to complete and hand in make-up work for credit. The student must make specific arrangements with the teacher(s).
Unless exempted from this requirement by the Principal (in consultation with the teacher) assignments given by the teacher two or more weeks (ten school days) in advance of a student's absence will be due by the assigned date. An assignment turned in after the due date will be graded by the teacher. When the quantitative/qualitative grade has been determined by the teacher, it may be reduced by no more than one letter grade for every day the assignment was turned in late.

"Flagging" or dropping unneeded courses to improve an overall grade point average is not acceptable. Flagging is done district wide at the end of the school year to improve a student's overall grade point average on the transcript for college admissions.
Withdrawing From School
According to SCPS guidelines, when students apply to Crooms AoIT they agree to remain for the entire school year. Therefore, students can only withdraw from Crooms AoIT because they are moving out of Seminole county.
